No cookies, no advertising trackers
The break.rocks web app sets no cookies. It uses no advertising trackers and no third-party analytics, and shares nothing with advertisers. It measures its own use with anonymous statistics, which you can turn off. The ads planned for public universes would be contextual, without trackers (see the Privacy policy).
What the web app stores in your browser
To work, the web app stores a few items in your browser's local storage and session storage, and keeps the images of universes in its cache. They stay on your device, and are used only to provide the service you asked for and, for the statistics, to measure the use of the Service.
| Item | Purpose | Kept |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in session (tokens of our authentication service, and the last account signed in) | keeping you signed in | until you sign out, or your session expires (7 days without use) |
| Sign-in in progress (session storage) | finishing a sign-in step | until the tab is closed |
| Identifier of this device | applying the settings that belong to this device, such as its display mode | until you clear it |
| Current universe | bringing you back to the universe you were in | until you clear it |
| Universe themes | showing each universe's theme at once | until you clear it |
| Images and banners of universes (cache) | showing universes without downloading them again | 300 at most, the least recently used replaced first |
| Display mode | your Night, Dim, Day or Automatic choice | until you change it |
| Language | your language choice | until you change it |
| Your choices on this device (tabs, home mode, layout and focus of universes, recent searches, hidden suggestions…) | finding the app as you left it | until you clear them |
| Post draft | not losing a post you're writing | until you post or clear it |
| Personal invitation link opened | linking your registration to the person who invited you | 30 days at most |
| Push prompt shown | not asking twice to turn on push notifications | until you clear it |
| Unsent posts and actions | sending them once you're back online | until they're sent |
| Anonymous statistics (an identifier of the installation, and your setting) | counting anonymous events of use (opening the app, registering, posting…) to measure the growth of the Service, never linked to your account | the identifier is renewed every 13 months; off in Me › Privacy and safety › Anonymous statistics |
The web app also uses a service worker to receive push notifications, if you turn them on. Your browser then keeps a push subscription, which you can revoke in your browser settings at any time.
These items are strictly necessary for the service you request, except the anonymous statistics, which only measure the audience of the Service, without following you on other sites, and which you can turn off at any time. Under the ePrivacy Directive, as applied in France by the CNIL to audience measurement, none of them requires your consent.
Mobile apps
The mobile apps store similar items on your device (your session, current universe, themes, display mode, language, data saver setting, and a local encrypted copy of what you've seen, so it opens at once and works offline). They also keep an anonymous identifier of the installation, used only to send anonymous statistics, error reports and performance measurements (startup time, failed requests…) — never linked to your account. The anonymous statistics can be turned off in the app's settings.
Clearing them
Signing out removes your session. You can clear all the other items from your browser settings (site data). The app then simply starts fresh, with the anonymous statistics turned on again.
