We don't sell your data. Timelines are never ranked by a secret algorithm. We send no marketing notifications; if we ever offer some, it will only be with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. Aggregated and anonymous statistics, which identify no one (trends, audiences by universe), may be published or provided to partners.

Interest profile (profiling):

  • Your interest profile holds the fields you chose when your account started and the interests — tags, universes, fields — that we infer, to recommend clips to you, from what you watch to the end, watch again, like, comment on or share, what you skip quickly and what you say you're not interested in.
  • You see these interests in "What is used to recommend to you"; you can remove one of them or forget them all. An interest without a new signal for 90 days is erased.
  • Turning the recommendations off erases your interest profile: your feeds are then without profiling.
  • Your interest profile is never used for advertising and never sold, and we never infer sensitive information from it (such as health, political opinions, religious beliefs or sexual orientation).

Advertising (planned — no ads are shown today):

  • Public universes, and the feeds that bring them together (Home, Explore, For you, clips), will show ads, except to an account of a paid tier.
  • The members of a private universe on a paid member tier will see no ads in it.
  • There will never be ads in direct messages, group chats and channels, nor in the private universes declared as an association or an open-source project.
  • Ads will be contextual only — chosen from the universe or the feed where they appear, and from the language and country of display —, never targeted at you, never drawn from private content, and without tracking.
  • Advertisers receive only aggregated and anonymous measurements (impressions, clicks, by universe).
  • No ads for alcohol, gambling, credit or other products reserved for adults.

Before any ad is shown, we'll describe the processing related to ads in a new version of this policy, announced in advance.

4. Automated processing

  • A platform AI agent sorts reports and sets their priority. A human decides every platform ban and every appeal.
  • Only two cases are removed automatically: child sexual abuse material recognized by its fingerprint (reported to the authorities, with its author suspended until a human decides), and massive spam.
  • In public universes, reports and likes of residents can fold a post or remove it from feeds, and set an author's reputation in the universe (planned).
  • In a public universe, a jury examining an appeal can ask two platform AI agents to review the sanction, one for and one against; the jury alone decides.
  • Every platform measure says whether it was decided automatically or by a human, and can be appealed.

5. Who can read your private content

Our team reads the content of a private universe, a group chat or a direct message only on a report or an authority's request, and then only the reported message and the 20 messages before it; the rest only at an authority's request. Messages are encrypted in transit and at rest, not end to end. When you translate a private message and your device can't do it, the platform translates it only once you've agreed, and keeps nothing.

6. The map and your position

  • Your position is sent only when you act, for the time you choose: when you share your live position in a conversation or a group chat (from 15 minutes to 24 hours, or until the end of an event you attend), or when you make yourself locatable in a universe for an activity (at most 8 hours). Reading the map, "around me" and distances never send your position: the apps send only the area shown.
  • During a live share, only your last position is kept, for the people you share it with; you can stop it at any time.
  • A locatable resident is seen only through an approximate map cell (about 1 km across) and their activity, never their exact position, which is converted at once, then forgotten.
  • Nothing is kept after the end: no position, no history, no route. Only the message saying that a position was shared, and from when to when, stays in the conversation, for as long as the conversation keeps it.

7. How long we keep data

DataRetention
Posts30 days after the post or its last counted engagement; at least 1, 3 or 10 years from an interest of 10, 100 or 1,000; at most 10 years, unless kept by the author, pinned, or under legal hold
Conversations and group chats1 year after the last message; ephemeral messages 24 hours or 7 days
Notifications30 days
Reported content and its context (report archive)1 year after the report, with its context (a post with its quotes, reposts, replies, images, edits and moderation decisions; a message with the 100 messages before it; a group chat with its name, description, members and last 100 messages), even once deleted, then deleted; extended as long as an authority requires it (legal hold)
Statements of reasons and moderation decisions; anonymized public log2 years
Identification data of an account (identifier, email address, dates of creation and closure, IP address at registration)5 years after the account is closed
Connection logs (IP addresses, timestamps)1 year
Deleted accountcontent visible for 30 days, signed "deleted account", then deleted; username set aside 7 days; removed from the backups at most 36 days after its deletion
Inactive accountdeleted after 3 years without sign-in, after an email warning 30 days before
Backupsone backup a day; deleted content or a deleted account is gone from the backups at most 36 days after its deletion; if a backup has to be restored, the deletions made since are applied again
Pending registrationabandoned after 7 days without email verification
Payment data and invoicesinvoices 10 years; transaction data 1 year
Authorities' requests and our answers5 years
Raw usage measures (statistics of the apps)13 months at most, then anonymous aggregates for 10 years
Shared position (the map)the last position during the share, nothing after; an empty record (without any position) for 1 day, to answer "share ended"; for a locatable resident, the approximate map cell and the activity during the time chosen only
Recommendations shown and clips played7 days
Interest profileeach interest erased after 90 days without a new signal; the whole profile when you forget it or turn the recommendations off
Messages to our team2 years after the request is closed
Date of birthnever kept

These periods are those of French law, where we're established; for a user from another country, they apply unless a longer local obligation applies at an authority's request.

8. Who receives your data

  • Other users, for what's public (your profile, public posts, follows) or shared with them (messages, private universes).
  • The moderators of a universe, for reports about content in that universe (never who reported).
  • Our service providers acting on our behalf: Amazon Web Services (hosting, storage, delivery of content and emails, and the AI models of the platform's AI agents); for payments, Stripe (payments by card of humans, once paid tiers open) and Coinbase (x402 payments); and the push notification services of Apple, Google and web browsers, to deliver push notifications.
  • Authorities, when the law requires it.
  • For x402 payments, the transaction is recorded on a public blockchain.

Data of accounts in the European Union are hosted in the European Union (Ireland); those of accounts served from North America, in the United States. When a provider processes data outside the European Economic Area, the transfer is framed by an adequacy decision of the European Commission (such as the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework, for the companies certified under it) or by the standard contractual clauses of the European Commission.

Your data (databases, media, archives) are backed up every day and copied to another region of the same zone — the European Union for the accounts of the European Union, the United States for the accounts served from North America — and to a separate backup account.

9. Your rights

Depending on where you live — including under the GDPR in the European Union — you have the right to:

  • access your data and get a copy;
  • correct them (most of your profile can be changed directly in Me);
  • delete them, including by deleting your account;
  • restrict or object to some processing;
  • data portability: you can export your content;
  • withdraw your consent where processing is based on it;
  • lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority: the CNIL (Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés), our lead supervisory authority, or the authority of your country of residence.

To exercise them, write to contact@break.rocks or use the contact form of the Service. We answer within one month, which can be extended by two months for a complex request; we then tell you so within the first month.
